With Referral Factory you can automate your entire referral program from start to finish without a developer or needing to write a line of code. Including issuing unique coupons to customers who sign up to the referral program.
This is what you'll need in order to issue coupons
- A Basic or Pro Referral Factory subscription.
- The ability to create coupons or discount codes from your business
This help guide will tell you everything you need to issue coupons to your users and how it works:
- Creating your own coupons
- Uploading your coupons to your campaign
- Styling your coupon codes
- Building your referral campaign
- Adding coupons to your referral campaign
- Issuing coupons to users
- Qualifying referrals using coupon codes
- Tracking your coupon codes
1. Creating your own coupons
Referral Factory simply distributes the coupon codes to users. We cannot create them for you so you will need to do this on your system first. You can generate multiple coupons from your point of sale, billing software, or your e-commerce store for example. Once you have this, you can export the coupons into a CSV list that you will upload to Referral Factory.
When making the coupons in your system, you can create the rules for those coupons. We would highly recommend making sure each coupon can only be used once which will prevent people from gaming their system and just sharing their codes with their friends or on different coupon sites.
Once you have created all your coupons, you can export them all to a CSV which you will then upload to Referral Factory.
2. Uploading your coupons to your campaign
Once you have created your unique coupons, login to your Referral Factory account. Click on the Coupons tab on the left-hand navigation bar.
Click on the ‘Upload NewCoupons’ button
Name your coupons so you can easily identify them and from the drop menu, select which campaign you want to allocate these coupons to.
You can either manually add your coupons or upload a list of them. In this example, we’re going to upload our own. Click on the ‘Browse’ button and select the CSV you wish to upload.
Please note* that your CSV should not have a header row. It should just be a list of coupon codes.
Here is a screenshot of what your CSV should look like - of course, the codes will show the ones you created on your end.
3. Styling your coupon codes
You can also design the look and feel of your coupons so that they match the rest of your campaign making sure your entire referral program looks and feels 100% on brand.
You can do the following:
- Add a background image
- Choose a plain background
- Change the font type
- Change the font colour
- And, change the font size
Once you’re happy with the design, click Save.
If you’re not sure what you want your coupons to look like now, you can always edit them once they are in your campaign.
When you’re done uploading and styling your coupons and you save your settings, you’ll be able to see the coupons you just uploaded in your Coupons Dashboard
4. Building your referral campaign
You can build a fully customized referral campaign. The drag-and-drop builder allows you to add your own logo, change the background, edit the font settings and add new content such as headlines, text, images, and videos.
You can either add contacts to your campaign or allow them to sign up themselves. Once referrers join the campaign, they will be issued a unique referral link which they can easily share with their friends using the social media channels that you select.
Referrers can share their link with their friends and invite them to join the campaign to get some sort of a discount or offer. When the person invited, clicks on their link, they get taken to a landing page where they can join your referral campaign.
This part of the campaign is very important as it’s the first thing that the person invited or referred friends will see about your business. Make sure you include all the information you want new referred leads to see. The goal of this page is to get new referred leads to join the campaign and submit their details in order to get their discount coupon.
5. Adding coupons to your referral campaign
Adding coupons to your referral program is as easy as simply dragging the coupon into the campaign.
You first need to decide at which point in your referral program you want to issue the coupon. In the example below, we have decided to issue the coupon to a new referred lead after they have signed up to our referral program. This will be step 4 inside your campaign builder.
Click on the Coupons icon on the right-hand side.
Toggle on the option to show your coupon.
The coupons that you uploaded previously will be shown here. Our system will continue down the list of coupons you added and issues them for each new referred lead that joins your referral program.
Once you can see what the coupon will look like inside your campaign, you can also adjust the styling of the coupon so it matches your campaign.
6. Issuing coupons to users
Now that you have built your campaign and added the coupons, it’s time to see how Referral Factory issues coupons to users that join your campaign. To do that, you need to go through the entire journey of your referral program. First, you need to publish your campaign - you can do that from the Output tab. Copy your campaign link and open it up to start testing.
- Step 1 - Sign up to your referral program (as a person invited). In this example: firstname.lastname@example.org is the person referring.
- Step 2 - Jessica shares her referral link through social media with her friends.
- Step 3 - Her friends click on the link where they get taken to a landing page to join your referral link (as a person invited). In this example: email@example.com is the person invited.
- Step 4 - Stacey gets issued her unique coupon code
After Stacey joins the referral campaign, she gets issued her own unique coupon Test 001 which she can use on your website or platform in order to get her discount or incentive for becoming a new customer.
Important to note:
- You will also need to use a different email address as only one email address can be used in each campaign.
7. Qualifying referrals using coupon codes
There are three ways that you can qualify a referral when a coupon code has been redeemed.
Once an invited person uses their coupon to register for a subscription, make a purchase or anything else, you can mark that coupon as used or redeemed. This lets you know that the person invited has qualified or that the referral has successfully converted. You will then know who needs to be issued a reward or a coupon for the referral.
You can manually qualify a referral once the coupon code has been used on your side. Or you can Webhooks, Zapier or our API to do this automatically. Below is a diagram of how this works. And below the diagram is a screenshot of how you can mark a coupon as used manually.
2. Using Zapier
You can use the "Qualify referrals using coupon" zap to qualify a referral when the coupon is used.
For example - if you issue a coupon from Shopify, when you see that coupon has been used, you can use the Zap to send the coupon back to Referral Factory so we know it's been used. Our system will then qualify the referral.
3. Using webhooks
You can use an inbound webhook so that you can easily qualify your referred users - simply by sending their unique coupon to the endpoint given to you in your account. You can find this endpoint by going to the COUPONS tab,
Hit SHOW to see your webhook endpoint, and please remember to keep this endpoint URL private.
8. Tracking your coupon codes
In your coupons dashboard, you will be able to see
- The batch names of the coupons you’ve uploaded.
- The campaign they are associated with.
- The number of coupons that have been uploaded.
- The number of coupons that have been issued.
- Then the number of coupons that have been used.
In your Coupons Issued tab, you can see which of your users have been issued with coupons, who referred them, the coupon number, and the date the coupon was issued. This allows you to easily identify who users have been issued which coupon codes and when.
The Coupons Used tab will show you which of your users have redeemed their coupons as well as the date the coupon was issued and when it was used so you can see how long it takes users to convert.
You can also use the filters to search for users with coupons issued or issued between certain dates.
If you need any help using our coupon feature please email firstname.lastname@example.org. We'd be happy to show you how it works on a quick call.
